January is nearly coming to an end and I still have not written a post about my last trip of 2016! I blame it on not having wifi at home and a very busy start of the year, but no more excuses. In 2016, I had a great year of travelling and I visited so many new places: Los Angeles, Istanbul, Cappadocia, Porto, Bruges and Copenhagen. I ended the year with a weekend in Berlin with Welovetobrunch. What is Welovetobrunch?
Welovetobrunch is a meet up group I started over 2 years ago which aims to bring together people who love food (especially brunch), exploring London and photography. Together with my friend Rosella we have organised meet ups in London, and not only every month, following a simple format: the meet up is announced on Welovetobrunch Instagram page with a first come first serve principle and then we meet for food, every time in different coffee shop or restaurant. After the brunch, we will always go for a walk, which is open to everyone, this is to burn off what we ate and discover a new neighbourhood.
Last December, thanks to Visit Berlin, we organised our first meet up in Berlin, a city that was high on my list of European cities to visit for a while. I was super excited to discover it together with my friend and to make new friends, so with a very long list of things to do, we left London on a Friday evening. Tip: before you arrive in Berlin, buy a Welcome Card which can be used immediately when you arrive. If you haven't printed your Welcome Card, like us, please note that the ticket machine at Tegel airport will not accept debit card or 20 €, however the bus driver will happily give you change for 20 €.
We stayed in Amano Grand Central which is perfectly located a few minutes from Berlin central station, it offers a good size room and a great buffet breakfast!
On the first day the cold weather gave us the perfect excuse to spend the day coffee hopping, even though we also managed a bit of sightseeing. The second day was all about the brunch meet up, which we had at Silo Coffee as they were so kind to make an exception to their no booking rule. All of the people attending the meet up didn't know each other, however the common interests of photography, travel and Instagram united us all from the beginning and, as always, it felt we had known each other for a while. The brunch was perfect- both coffee and food- and the service was excellent, even though they were clearly super busy, we didn't feel rush at all. After the brunch, even though we didn't have a walk planned, we just walked for hours admiring different corners of Berlin.
Where we had coffee and food
Distrikt Coffee - great coffee, prepare to queue if you want to have brunch here during the weekend or get there early. From what we have seen the food looks superb.
Ora, Oranienpl. 14, 10999 Berlin - easily the restaurant with the prettiest interiors in Berlin, a former pharmacy with most of the original furnishing. I had an amazing artichoke and turnip risotto.
The Store - a new concept from Soho House Berlin, this beautiful space has a dj, it is a restaurant, but it is also a shop and much more. Just fab!
Five Elephants - this was one of our stops during the brunch meet up and everyone agreed it was one of the best cheesecakes we have ever had.
House of small wonders - this place is instafamous because of its entrance, however the food is also amazing - we had potato gratin- and the interiors upstairs should also be photographed. Shame that we visited when it was already dark.
Our first day in Berlin, it was exceptionally cold (apparently), so all we did was going from one cafe to another. ORA had us at hello, a former pharmacy with most of the original furnishing still there, it is just a stunning space. I think we went a bit crazy in there and we just couldn't stop taking photos. The artichoke and turnip risotto was also delicious. Thanks @roselladegori for taking me here! The photo doesn't do this place justice. #wltbinberlin #foodspots_berlin #visit_berlin
